7 Rules For Solid Lead Magnets

So, what is a Lead Magnet?

The Lead Magnet is an irresistible bribe that gives a specific chunk of value
to a prospect in exchange for their contact information - usually an email address.

Let’s go back.  Way back.  Internet marketing was a burgeoning territory… the Wild West.

Well, not literally.  But in most ways I was out there figuring things out on my own.

So I created an ebook in the make money online niche.

Mistake → the book was 62 pages (hey, I had a lot to say!).

See, even though I chose a hot niche, and had a hot topic, there was just too much
information.  So one of the golden rules of Lead Magnets: Keep it Small

Here’s a checklist of things to look for when creating a Lead Magnet.

- Fast Read
Your customer gave you their precious email address… Reward them by not wasting their time.  Make it quick and to the point.  Your lead magnet shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to read and comprehend.

- Honed In
Your Lead magnet needs to be specific.  Think, if you knew someone was hungry for chicken, would you put up a sign that says “chicken” or “fresh grilled chicken, sprinkled with orange zest with a hint of rosemary."

Which one would you buy if you were hungry for chicken? So be specific and unique with your lead magnet.  They can’t get it anywhere else so they need to get it from you.

- “If I only had a heart...”
Just like the Tin Man (or was it the Lion) in Wizard of Oz, everyone has one huge thing that they want or need in their life.  Make a big promise and deliver it times 100.

- “Gimme Now!” Deliver it all.
You promised an answer. Deliver it in one email.  Don’t tease them by dripping it out.

- Positions You as an Authority
Don’t just “educate” your reader… Prepare them for future communications. Give them enough value that they look forward to hearing from you again… and again…

- Quality Cover Image
For psychological reasons, your ebook should have a professionally designed cover.  If it looks cheap and worthless, it will be perceived as cheap and worthless.

- Deliver the Goods:
Your prospect gave you their email in exchange for a unique promise.  A big promise.  Your Lead Magnet needs to deliver.

So there you go.  You have the basics of creating a Lead Magnet.  Dig down deep and you’ll discover that you know a lot that is worth sharing.
